As first-time parents, ensuring your new-born's hygiene can feel overwhelming. You’ve likely heard about sponge baths, also known as top to tail baths, but may be wondering why they’re recommended for new-borns instead of a full bath. At My First Nursery, we’re here to help you understand the reasons behind this practice and guide you through the process with the right tools.

Why Sponge Baths Over Full Baths?
New-borns have extremely delicate skin and an even more fragile umbilical cord stump that requires extra care. Here’s why sponge baths are the preferred method for keeping your baby clean during the first few weeks of life:
1) Protecting Delicate Skin A baby’s skin is soft and sensitive, and using soap or shampoo too frequently can dry it out. Instead, a gentle sponge bath with just water helps avoid irritation while still ensuring cleanliness. Full immersion in water may seem natural, but new-borns don’t need a deep clean as often as older children do.
2) Caring for the Umbilical Cord Until the umbilical cord stump falls off (usually within the first two weeks), it’s important to keep it dry. Submerging your baby in water increases the risk of infection around the stump. A sponge bath allows you to clean the surrounding areas without disturbing the healing process.
3) Gentle Introduction to Bathing A sponge bath provides a calming, intimate experience for both parents and baby. The warmth of a damp cloth and the gentle touch of your hands can help soothe your new-born while building trust and comfort with bath time routines.
The Benefits of Sponge Bathing
• Reduces Risk of Dry Skin: With no need for frequent soaps or shampoos, sponge baths prevent dryness while still maintaining hygiene.
• Simple and Quick: It’s easier to give your baby a quick sponge bath than to fill a tub and manoeuvre around your new-born.
• Bonding Opportunity: Bathing your new-born is a chance to connect and create a calm environment, especially as part of your bedtime routine.
How to Give Your Baby a Sponge Bath
1) Pick the Right Time: Some parents prefer mornings when babies are alert, while others choose evenings as part of a calming bedtime ritual. Whatever time you pick, make sure your baby is calm and not hungry or overtired.
2) Gather Essentials: Before starting, make sure you have everything you need within arm’s reach: a couple of flannels, a soft towel, a clean nappy, a fresh change of clothes, mild baby soap (optional), and a bowl or cup of warm water.
3) Keep Your Baby Warm: Ensure the room is comfortably warm, and undress your baby carefully. Use a warm, damp flannel to cover areas you’re not washing to help keep them cosy during the bath.
4) Clean from Top to Tail: Start by gently wiping your baby’s face and head with a damp cloth without soap. Be sure to avoid getting water into your baby’s eyes or mouth. Clean their hands, feet, and the creases of their neck and behind the ears. Finally, clean the nappy area last, always supporting your baby’s head and neck.
5) Take Care Around the Umbilical Stump: Be sure to clean around the umbilical stump carefully, keeping it as dry as possible to prevent infection. If it gets wet, pat it dry gently with a soft towel.
6) Finish Up: Once clean, gently dry your baby with a soft, hooded towel. Wrap them in warmth, put on a fresh nappy, and get them dressed.
